Dragon / Oregon
The Dragon Scarves
As a second generation hat maker, this is one of my first contribution to the Hat People presentation. I no longer maintain them in our standard booth presentation, but I would be happy to make one as a special order. I have many fabric colors available. The Dragon Scarf began while falling asleep in the passenger side of a car in the pouring down rain, traveling back from a Hat People Christmas Fair. I saw a sign out the window that said something like “Oregon, 14 miles,” but I thought it said “Dragon…” I later reflected that this bizarre experience was not too far from the truth: Dragon and Oregon are similar words in a certain sort of way. The rest that became Dragon Scarves came along sometime later. I was inspired by certain wools from our fabric library, sewn to a cotton backing with finished edges. The wool patchwork effect layers like dragon scales, and the scarves are so substantial that they connect, for me, with the myth that you never see a whole dragon- some part of it is always shrouded in mist or otherwise hidden from view. You see, although I am a hat maker by trade, my free time is spent doing theater and writing fiction. Dragons are a major inspiration for my art. The scarves come in three sizes ~ Freshen, Florid, & Elder ~ named for the three ages of dragons, a story motif of my own design.
If you are interested in my writing, I currently have a novel published (sans dragons, plus other stuff). Below is a link to my arts website.
